10 Types of Rings & What They Mean

Rings are more than just pretty decorations to adorn your fingers. They can be full of meaning, worn for protection, or given as a symbol of love. Here are ten types of rings and what they mean.

Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is a ring worn by a person who is soon to be married. It is given as a promise of marriage and is usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. In some cultures, the engagement ring is worn on the right hand until the wedding day.

Wedding Ring

A wedding ring is a ring that symbolizes that the person wearing it is married. It is usually made of gold or silver and worn on the left hand's fourth finger. In some cultures, both men and women wear wedding rings.

Class Ring

A class ring is a type of graduation ring given to a student upon graduation from high school or college. Class rings usually have the graduate's name, graduation year, and school logo. They are typically made of gold or silver and worn on the right hand's third finger.

Friendship Ring

A friendship ring is a type of purity ring that signifies the wearer's commitment to remain abstinent until marriage. Friendship rings are usually sterling silver and have either "True Love Waits" or "Purity" engraved. They are typically worn on the fifth finger on the left hand or a necklace.

Promise Ring

A promise ring is a sign of commitment in a relationship and can signify many things, such as abstinence from drugs or alcohol, fidelity, or celibacy. Promise rings can be made of any material and are often inscribed with something like "I promise." Eternity Ring

An eternity ring is a band of precious metal (usually gold or platinum) with diamonds running around it. It symbolizes everlasting love and is usually given to wives or girlfriends on special anniversaries, such as the anniversary of when they first met, got engaged, or got married. Eternity rings are typically worn on the third finger of the right hand but can also be worn on the fourth finger of the left hand next to an engagement ring or wedding band.

Family Crest Ring

A family crest ring is a signet ring with a coat of arms etched into it. These were once used to seal letters and documents with wax so that only people with that crest could open them (hence their other name, "seal rings"). Now they are mostly just worn as jewelry, but some still use them to seal letters in wax for special occasions such as weddings or graduations.

Choosing The Right Size Ring

Deciding on the right size ring can be tricky, especially if you're shopping for jewelry online. Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect fit.

First, measure your finger using a flexible measuring tape. If you don't have a measuring tape, you can also use a string or strip of paper. Wrap the string or paper around your finger, mark the spot where it meets, and then measure the length with a ruler. Once you have your finger measurement, refer to a ring size chart to find the corresponding ring size.

If you're still not sure which size to choose, keep in mind that most rings can be resized by a jewelry specialist. So if you're unsure, it's better to err on the side of slightly too large than too small. You can always have the ring resized later, but it's much more difficult to make a ring larger.
